Marco Basaiti
St. Peter Enthroned and Saints

Second or third decade of the 16th century
Basilica of San Pietro, Venice

St. Peter wears a papal tiara and holds keys in his left hand. St. Philip stands at the far left with the long cross that is his attribute. The man next to him has a crozier and a cope but no mitre; he could be St. Nicholas, who legend says was forbidden the mitre because of his intemperance at the Council of Nicea. Or he could simply be a well-dressed abbot.

On the right, St. James the Greater holds his pilgrim's staff. Judging from the black habit, the man standing next to him could be St. Benedict or some other Benedictine.
